The book is part of the publisher's "White Edition" series published from the 1920sto the 1950’s. First editions published by Reilly & Britton in 1909 had a different binding color (light green cloth) and specific first-printing points, such as the publisher name in upper and lower case letters on the spine and pages printed on colored paper. Later editions, such as this one, typically had white spines and black-and-white illustrations throughout, rather than color plates or colored pages.

The Dog Illustration

The dog illustrated on the spine is Toto, Dorothy's companion in the Oz books. Interestingly, in the original 1909 illustrations for The Road to Oz, Toto was inexplicably depicted as a French Bulldog on the spine before returning to the terrier look of earlier books. The character description in the text of the first book described Toto as a little black dog with long silky hair.
